2008 APC Specialty Field Events
Walking Field Trial & Hunt Test
The 2008 APC Walking Field Trial and Hunt Test was
held in Petersburg, Indiana on September 27th and 28th
at the Pike County Bird Hunter’s Club.
The grounds consisted of two large open fields
with tall grasses and tree lines which held birds well.
The course was easy to follow and water tanks were marked
well.
Both fields, in
part, could be viewed from the club house.
The facilities were very nice although some A/C
would have been nice for the Saturday evening dinner and auction!
The food and hospitality the Club showed us was better than
expected.
The homemade
deserts and made to order breakfasts were the highlights of our
dining experience for the weekend.
The walking trial began Saturday morning with a
cool breeze but known to all, it wasn’t going to stay that way.
Later than morning the temperature reached into the 80’s.
The birds were strong, good flyers but due to the temperature
and areas of thick grass, the bird work was not abundant.
Placements
and trophies were awarded early that evening.
The trophies given
out with
placement rosettes were from Goodrich
Pottery.
I was very impressed with how the
trophies turned
out as well as the
complimentary decorative tiles labeled
with APC and different colored Pointers on point.
These tiles were given to each exhibitor for both events.
The same company made our judges gifts as well; ceramic mugs with
the judges preferred breed of dog on the side.
Everyone had a fun time at
the auction which rose just shy of $1,000.
It seemed that almost everyone went home with something, even
some of our judges and the AKC representative participated.
The Hunt Test was held on Sunday.
We started just a bit behind schedule due to some light fog
but once it cleared it became obvious that it would be an even
warmer day than Saturday.
There were no passing Masters or Seniors this year
but there was plenty of bird work and placements given to the
Juniors and their handlers.
The end of Sunday and the weekend was marked by a
seminar by Diane Vater and Chuck Cooper on how to select a puppy for
the field and some starter tips which was demonstrated with some of
our Pointer puppies.
It
was really fun watching the puppies get excited on those birds!
A big thanks goes to Chuck and Diane for sticking around to
discuss field trialing and bird dogs and answering intelligent
questions with direct response.
The majority of exhibitors and some of the old timer club
members attended.
Overall, we received a lot of good
feedback that the trial was well run, the committee was hospitable,
and was just a good time from the judges, exhibitors, and even the
AKC representative (Gary Sadler).
It was good company, good food, and good fun for all.
The 2009 Walking Field Trial and Hunt Test will be
held at The Hunt Club in Percy, Illinois on September 20th
& 21st.
To
those planning to attend, see you there next year!
