2011 APC National Specialty Judge's Critique
Thoughts from APC 2011……Gloria Geringer, Judge
Thank You for the privilege of being elected to judge the 2011 APC National Specialty. It was very exciting to be there. The show site, Olympia Resort in Oconomowoc,, I am sure worked well with the show committee which is a huge relief but there are so many other details to be done and this committee’s dedication and hard work was surely evident. The trophies were lovely breed clay pieces and even had APC 2011 on the bottom making them truly memorable.
Overall I found the dogs of good substance and type and able to do the job they are bred for. This is evident by the entries in the Field and Hunt events.
Winners Dog and Best of Winners, Black Alder Dashiell Hammett, a black and white dog, was a lovely stallion male, good head planes, proper layback of shoulder, good fill in chest with a well sprung ribcage, good strong back with proper tail set and carriage. He had flawless movement. It was a great day for him as this finished his championship. Reserve Winners Dog came from the 6-9 class, Seasyde Edgehill Heart of Gold.
Winners Bitch, Coralwood Sweet Bay Damn Yankees, was a lovely orange and white 6-9 puppy bitch. She had all the attributes of my Winners Dog just in a younger package. What s sweet girl as she moved confidently around the ring. Reserve Winners Bitch from the Open Class was Black Alder Agatha Christie.
I learned later that my Winners Dog from the Open Class, 2nd place in Open Dog and Reserves Winners Bitch from Open Bitch class were all littermates and were the get of the Best of Opposite Sex bitch.
When I returned to the room, my ring stewards were assembling the Best of Breed Class. It was an impressive sight as they stood around the huge ring and then made a second row around. I got down to the job at hand and started with no more than eight of the first dogs. Then I made cuts as I went thru the Specials until I had dogs filling about half of the ring. I must mention the ring. It was a very worthy size for the dogs and the footing was extraordinary which was a big plus at this point when there is no room for error.
As I turned from watching the last dog in line, my eyes fell on what became my Best of Breed winner, a beautiful black and white dogs standing in line in all his masculinity. When he moved it was flawless, his down and back was clean with a slight convergence, a proper layback and topline enabled him to have an effortless side gait. He is GCh. Tahari’s To Wild To Be Serious. The Best of Opposite a lovely balanced liver and white bitch CH Dobe’s Den Point Sex Simbol. Again, had lovely shoulders and layback, strong back and topline, flawless down and back and smooth side gait. Then getting to the Select and Awards of Merit from the balance of the cuts was a very difficult job. I had so many lovely dogs in that final ring of dogs. Select Dog and Award of Merit was Ch. Pen Point-Honor Abracadabra; Select Bitch and Award of Merit was Ch. Seasyde Hollywood. Further Awards of Merit went to Ch. Kingscroft Night In Havanna RN from the Veteran 9-11 year old class, Ch. Chesterhope Miss D’Arcy and Ch. Seasyde Berries Jubilee which were littermates to the Select Bitch.
There was a feeling of joy and camaraderie these two days. It is so important to keep close to your Pointer family and to show your good dogs at all breed shows so judges can see what the Pointer is all about. They are a great Breed.
In closing, I wish to thank you so very much for this thrilling and memorable opportunity.
